An Introduction to Ethernet and TCP/IP for Industrial and Embedded Systems

Intended Audience

This course is for engineers who have relatively little experience of networking, or who need to update their knowledge. The course is a practical course - in the sense that students will be shown how to configure and manage IP networks and how to use a protocol analyzer - both to better understand how the protocols work, and for trouble-shooting purposes.

Course Overview

Ethernet controller chips are relatively cheap and widely available. This makes it possible to design embedded systems with ethernet communications capabilities. Such systems can be connected together via local area networks and accessed remotely via wide area networks. Improved fault tolerance in Industrial Ethernet Networks can be obtained by using ethernet switches with redundant connections and special failure recovery protocols. To be proficient in using TCP/IP and Ethernet technology a good understanding of ethernet technology, as well as a thorough understanding of the various protocols that make up the TCP/IP family of protocols is essential.
